New research suggests that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
